Swiss Glossary

A simple and quick guide to Swiss accounting and tax terms used in Vosia.

QR-Bill

The new Swiss standard for invoices, replacing old payment slips. It contains a QR code with all payment information.

UID / VAT Number

The Enterprise Identification Number (UID) is unique for every Swiss company (e.g., CHE-123.456.789). If registered for VAT, it is followed by 'TVA', 'MWST', or 'IVA'.

IBAN & QR-IBAN

The IBAN is your international bank account number. The QR-IBAN is a special variant used only for QR-bills with a structured reference number.

Value Added Tax (VAT)

Consumption tax in Switzerland. Vosia supports the standard (8.1%), reduced (2.5%), and special accommodation (3.8%) rates.

Invoice

A commercial document issued to a client requesting payment for goods or services provided.

Quote / Estimate

An estimate of costs provided to the client before the work is performed. On Vosia, it can be converted into an invoice with one click.

Expense / Receipt

A cost incurred for business operations. On Vosia, you can photograph receipts and the AI will extract the data (amount, date, VAT).

General Ledger

The main record where all financial transactions of the company are recorded, divided by accounts.

Assets

Everything the company owns that has monetary value (e.g., cash, accounts receivable, machinery).

Liabilities

The financial debts and obligations of the company to third parties (e.g., bank loans, accounts payable).

Equity

The net worth of the company, which is the difference between Assets and Liabilities.

Debit

In double-entry bookkeeping, represents an increase in assets or expenses, or a decrease in liabilities.

Credit

In double-entry bookkeeping, represents an increase in liabilities or revenue, or a decrease in assets.

Fiscal Year

The 12-month accounting period for which financial statements are prepared. Often coincides with the calendar year.

Year-End Closing

The process of completing accounting records at the end of the fiscal year to prepare financial statements and tax returns.

Bank Reconciliation

The process of matching transactions recorded in Vosia with actual movements in your bank account to ensure balances match.
